Social Media…

So I missed about half the presentation from Tuesday, and I think I missed the meatier half too.

But reading around on other people’s blogs sure has helped me piece together some sort of picture of what I missed. I think it basically comes down to whether or not schools and teachers in particular are going to try to keep up with what is changing in the world (on the internet mostly), and try to use it in their classrooms. Using social media sites like Twitter, blogs, and facebook may be advantageous to a first year teacher. I think it would be a great idea to have a “professional” facebook page… You can use it exclusively for your teaching. Upload articles that will help students study, have class votes about what should be on the test, and it gives students an easy way to contact you!

Just an idea, but I think having a professional facebook page might be a good idea–it’ll keep your school life and real life separate, which is just wonderbar.

Guest Speaker: Howard Griffith (MB Ed, Web Based Learning)

Prof Nantais brought in a guest speaker for our Internet for Educators class. Howard Griffith informed us of the many options of WBC that exist in manitoba education today:

Web-Based course options;

Teacher Mediated Options;

Independent Option;

We discussed scenarios where WBC can be used and who the end-user would be.

WBCRS seems like a good resource for first year teachers or really any-year teachers. It is a service provided by Manitoba Education that allows teachers to make requests for WBC.

Mr. Griffith discussed how MB Ed tries to make WBC engaging for students so that they will be motivated to learn the course material. However, all courses are designed to have a teacher involved.

I appreciated the fact that we got to demo some of the WBC courses. I can see a lot of good resources here, and help for first year teachers. Some teachers who find themselves teaching at smaller rural schools may have to teach or use WBC, so this is a valuable opportunity.

Thanks Howard!
